Microsoft has more than a dozen Azure certifications, and the most common mistake we see is not choosing a hard one — it is choosing them in the wrong order. Doing AZ-305 before you can administer a VNet, or spending two months on AZ-900 when you already run production servers, both waste time. This guide maps the core ladder for 2026 and tells you exactly where to step on, based on where you are starting from.
The Core Ladder at a Glance
Updated 22 Jul 2026: AZ-400 previously also accepted an active AZ-204 certification as an alternate prerequisite. AZ-204 itself retires on 31 July 2026, and Microsoft has not published what, if anything, replaces that alternate path — see our AZ-204 retirement breakdown for the full picture. Until Microsoft clarifies otherwise, treat AZ-104 as the only prerequisite route into AZ-400.
Start Here: AZ-900 or Straight to AZ-104?
This is the fork that matters. If you come from a non-IT background — fresh graduate, tester moving to cloud, working in support — start with AZ-900: it builds the vocabulary (regions, subscriptions, IaaS vs PaaS, pricing) that every later exam assumes. If you already administer Windows or Linux servers, or have a year of any hands-on IT infrastructure work, skip it and go straight to AZ-104 — AZ-900 will not teach you anything a week of Microsoft Learn cannot, and it is not a prerequisite for anything.

Take the free AZ-900 mock exam. Score above 75% cold and you should skip straight to AZ-104 preparation. Score below 60% and the fundamentals course is genuinely for you.
AZ-104: The Anchor of the Whole Path
Whatever direction you eventually take, AZ-104 is the certification the rest of the ladder stands on. It is the formal prerequisite for both the Solutions Architect Expert and DevOps Engineer Expert certifications, and — more practically — it is the line item that appears in Azure administrator, cloud engineer, and support-engineer job descriptions across Hyderabad and the rest of India. It covers the five domains you will use daily: identity and governance, storage, compute, virtual networking, and monitoring.
After AZ-104: AZ-400 or AZ-305?
- ●Choose AZ-400 (DevOps Engineer Expert) if you enjoy building — pipelines, Git strategy, IaC, release automation. Typical roles: DevOps engineer, platform engineer, release engineer. Requires an active AZ-104 certification.
- ●Choose AZ-305 (Solutions Architect Expert) if you enjoy designing — translating business requirements into identity, network, data, and business-continuity architecture. Typical roles: cloud architect, technical consultant. Requires an active AZ-104 certification.
- ●There is no wrong order between the two — many senior engineers eventually hold both, and they share the AZ-104 foundation.
Renewals: Certifications Expire, Renewal Is Free
Associate and Expert certifications are valid for one year, but renewal costs nothing: Microsoft offers a free, open-book online renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn, available from six months before expiry. Pass it and the certification extends a full year from the current expiry date. Fundamentals certifications like AZ-900 never expire. Budget for the exams once — after that, staying certified is a yearly hour of revision, not a yearly fee.
A Realistic Timeline
- 1Weeks 1–2 — foundations: subscriptions, the portal, core services (or the full AZ-900 track if you are new to IT)
- 2Months 1–3 — AZ-104: study, hands-on labs, and practice exams until you consistently clear 80% on full-length mocks
- 3Months 3–6 — pick your branch: AZ-400 for the build path or AZ-305 for the design path, reusing everything AZ-104 taught you
- 4Ongoing — renew each certification free on Microsoft Learn once a year
