Microsoft has confirmed that AZ-204: Developing Solutions for Microsoft Azure retires on 31 July 2026 — along with the exam, the Azure Developer Associate certification it grants, and its renewal assessment. After that date you can no longer earn or renew AZ-204 in any form. The replacement is AI-200: Developing AI Cloud Solutions on Azure, leading to a new credential: Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate. What Exactly Retires on 31 July 2026
Three things retire together, not just the exam: the AZ-204 exam itself, the Azure Developer Associate certification it awards, and the free annual renewal assessment that keeps an existing certification current. The cutoff is 11:59 PM Central Time on 31 July 2026, which lands in the morning of 1 August 2026 India time. Book and pass before that moment and the certification is yours under the old exam; miss it and AZ-204 is simply gone as a path.
Warning: Existing AZ-204 Holders Are Not Immediately Affected
A certification you already hold does not vanish on 1 August 2026 — it stays valid through its current one-year cycle. What is unclear from Microsoft's public guidance is what happens at your next renewal date, since the AZ-204 renewal assessment is retiring too. Meet the Replacement: AI-200
AI-200: Developing AI Cloud Solutions on Azure leads to the new Microsoft Certified: Azure AI Cloud Developer Associate credential. The exam runs 40–60 questions in roughly 100–120 minutes, passes at the familiar 700/1000 scaled score, and carries no formal prerequisite — though Microsoft assumes working proficiency in Python, the Azure SDKs, containerization, and vector databases going in. It has been rolling out through 2026, so confirm its current exam status (GA vs. beta) on Microsoft Learn before booking.

Why This Is a Rebuild, Not a Rename

AI-200 is not a refreshed version of that; it is a different exam built around AI-first cloud development — event-driven AI pipelines, containerized AI compute, and vector databases as first-class exam content. It fits a broader pattern this year: Microsoft has also introduced AB-100 (Agentic AI Business Solutions Architect) and AB-620 (AI Agent Builder Associate), consolidating several credentials around agentic AI. Read AI-200 as Microsoft repositioning "Azure developer" around AI workloads, not just patching an old exam.

What Should You Actually Do?
- ●Already certified in AZ-204: nothing to do today. Your credential holds through its current cycle — just watch your Microsoft Learn transcript as your renewal date approaches for Microsoft's specific guidance.
- ●Deep into AZ-204 prep, close to exam-ready: with roughly a week left before the 31 July 2026 cutoff, booking now only makes sense if you can genuinely pass today — not as a study deadline to rush toward.
- ●Just starting, or still weeks from ready: do not cram AZ-204 in the final days. Start with AI-200 instead — it is the exam that will still exist next month.
- ●On the infrastructure/admin track: if your goal is AZ-104, AZ-400, or AZ-305, this retirement does not touch you at all. Those are separate certifications on a separate track and remain fully active.
One Open Question: The AZ-400 Prerequisite
AZ-400 (DevOps Engineer Expert) has historically accepted either an active AZ-104 or an active AZ-204 as its prerequisite. Once AZ-204 stops being earnable, Microsoft has not publicly clarified whether that alternate path narrows to AZ-104 only or whether AI-200 becomes the new alternate. The Path That Is Completely Unaffected
