AZ-305 is the capstone of the Azure certification path: AZ-900 for fundamentals, AZ-104 for hands-on administration, then AZ-305 for architecture-level design judgment. Microsoft strongly recommends holding AZ-104 (or equivalent hands-on experience) before attempting it — and for good reason. AZ-305 is a design exam. You are not clicking through a portal or writing a script; you are reading a business scenario and choosing the best architecture, the same way you would in a real design review.

Microsoft updated this exam's domain weighting on 17 April 2026. Infrastructure design is now the single largest domain at nearly a third of the exam, with Business Continuity carrying more weight than it used to.

Infrastructure and Identity/Governance together are well over half the exam. If you are coming from AZ-104, you already have strong intuition here — the shift for AZ-305 is applying that intuition to open-ended "design the best solution" scenarios instead of "configure this one setting" tasks.
Why This Exam Feels Different from AZ-104
AZ-104 tests whether you can operate Azure — configure a VNet, assign an RBAC role, set up a backup policy. AZ-305 tests whether you can design a solution before any of that configuration happens. Questions describe a business requirement — cost constraints, compliance needs, expected traffic, disaster recovery targets — and ask you to choose the architecture that satisfies all of them simultaneously. There is rarely one "correct" service; there is a best trade-off given the stated constraints. Study accordingly: instead of memorizing configuration steps, practice reading a scenario, listing its constraints, and eliminating architectures that violate at least one of them.
The 8-Week Study Plan
This plan assumes AZ-104-level familiarity already exists and focuses on design judgment rather than re-teaching Azure basics. Budget roughly 6–8 hours per week.
Weeks 1–2 — Identity, Governance & Monitoring
- ●Microsoft Entra ID architecture: hybrid identity, Entra Connect, and conditional access design
- ●Management group and subscription hierarchy design for multi-team, multi-environment organizations
- ●RBAC design patterns: least-privilege role assignment at the right scope

Weeks 3–4 — Data Storage

Week 7 — Business Continuity

Week 8 — Case Study Practice & Mock Exams

Exam Day Strategy for a Design Exam
- 1For case studies, read the requirements section first, then the scenario narrative — you need to know what you're solving for before you read the details
- 2List every stated constraint (cost, compliance, RTO/RPO, existing infrastructure) before evaluating answer choices — most wrong answers violate exactly one constraint you'll miss if you skim
- 3When two architectures both technically work, the correct answer is usually the one requiring the least new infrastructure or the smallest operational footprint
- 4Business continuity questions almost always specify a numeric RPO or RTO — match the answer to that number precisely rather than picking the "most resilient-sounding" option
- 5Don't second-guess a confident first read on governance/RBAC questions — they test whether you know the correct pattern, and the first instinct from real experience is usually right

You need 700 out of 1000, same bar as AZ-104 — but the difficulty is in interpretation, not information recall. Give yourself extra time in weeks 7–8 for case-study practice specifically; that format is where most first-attempt failures happen.
