Is a Cloud Career Right for You? The AZ-900 Beginner’s Guide (2026)

Strip away the marketing and it’s simple: instead of buying and maintaining physical servers in your own building, you rent computing power, storage, and software from a provider like Microsoft (Azure), Amazon (AWS), or Google (GCP), and you pay for what you use. That’s the entire idea. Everything else — regions, subscriptions, IaaS/PaaS/SaaS — is vocabulary for different ways of renting.

• ●IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) — you rent raw virtual machines and networking, and manage the operating system yourself. Closest to running your own server, just rented.
• ●PaaS (Platform as a Service) — the provider also manages the operating system and runtime; you just deploy your application code.
• ●SaaS (Software as a Service) — you use finished software over the internet (Microsoft 365, Gmail) and manage nothing underneath it.
• ●Region — a physical cluster of data centers in a geographic area (e.g. Central India, East US) where your resources actually run.

Who AZ-900 Is Actually For

AZ-900 has no prerequisites and assumes no prior IT experience — that’s deliberate, not a limitation. It’s built for exactly these starting points:

• ●Fresh graduates who haven’t picked a specialization yet and want to know if cloud infrastructure is a fit before committing to it
• ●Testers, support engineers, and helpdesk staff looking to move into a more technical, better-paying track without switching companies overnight
• ●Non-technical roles — project managers, business analysts, sales engineers — who need to speak the vocabulary their technical teams use daily
• ●Anyone returning to work after a break who wants a low-pressure re-entry point into IT

The Honest Salary Picture

AZ-900 by itself won’t move your salary much — hiring managers look for it as a signal of genuine interest, not as a qualification on its own. The certification that actually appears in Hyderabad job listings and moves entry-level pay is AZ-104, typically landing fresh Cloud Engineers in the ₹6–14 LPA range depending on the company and any prior internship experience. Do You Need to Code or Have a CS Degree?

No. Most day-to-day Azure administration work — the AZ-104 track — is configuration and management through a portal, CLI commands, and templates, not software development. You don’t need a computer science degree, and you don’t need to already know how to program. What you do need: genuine comfort experimenting with unfamiliar tools without a manual for every step, and the discipline to actually do hands-on practice rather than just watch videos. If either of those feels like a stretch, that’s useful information too — it’s better to learn it during a $99 exam than after enrolling in a 45-day course.

AZ-900 costs $99 to sit (roughly ₹8,300, before any exchange-rate movement), needs no prerequisite exam or experience, and a focused beginner can realistically prepare in 2–4 weeks.
